MIDWEEK MENTION

MAKIN’ TRACKS

Sadly, this week’s mention is about a local store that is closing it’s doors.  Webster Records 117 W. Lockwood  63119 is going out of business after more than 1/2 a century of serving up amazing music!  As they say in the biz, music just ain’t what it used to be.  Gone are the days of heading out to grab the latest cassette or cd. Those same albums can now be downloaded in a few seconds from i-Tunes.  Sadly, modernity comes with a price.

The legendary store is open through next Tuesday, January 31st.  Inventory is currently marked at 50% off, with prices possibly going lower.  Much of the stock is gone, but a visit today turned up some dvds, cds and quite a few LP’s.  Here is a taste of what’s available:

- First up, lots of soundtracks!

"Rent" $7.99 from $15.99

"Annie" $7.49 from $14.99

"Glee" $7.99 from $15.99

"Elf" $6.49 from $12.99

"High School Musical" CD+DVD $12.49 from $24.99

- A few children’s titles:

"Baby loves Jazz" $6.49 from $12.99

"Imagination Movers" $7.99 from $15.99

Now for the best part!  The old school LP’s that are still in stock!  There was lots of jazz, blues and classical. Plus some HANTASTIC rock titles like these:

-My older sister introduced me to them when she was in high school, definitely upping my 4th grade cool factor!

Chicago "VII" $4.00 from $8.00

-Van Halen!  They’re coming to ScottTrade Center April 29th!  With David Lee Roth!  Who’s gonna be there?  ME!!

Van Halen "Women and Children First" LP+Poster $7.50 from $15.00

-Okay, it’s Elvis!  The King is STILL in the building!

Elvis "The Early Years" $5.00 from $10.00

- “Talkin’ bout chest hair!  Talkin’ about crazy, cool medallions!”  Sooo getting this one for Mr. M!

Barry Gibb "Now Voyager" $4.00 from $8.00

To grab a piece of music history, get over to Webster Records in Webster Groves fast.  Once the stock is gone, it’s really gone.  You know, this is the kind of store that people hate to see go, as evidenced by a scene I witnessed.  As the Fed Ex man left off his weekly delivery, the 10 year employee on duty said, “Hey man, if I don’t see you again…..well, I just want to say thanks.”  To which the Fed Ex man replied, echoing the sentiment of many, “No man, thank you.”  Thank you Webster Records for keeping it real for 58 years.

A refreshing Splash!

It’s been cold and wet and grey here in St. Louis.  Long winter days that have me dreaming of spring, or to be more precise, spring fashions!  Shops all around town are sprucing up their windows with displays of fun, colorful warm weather attire.  To get my fill of spring, reader Molly Ross suggested I check out Splash 8811 Ladue Rd 63124.  I am so glad I did!

The brightly lit, well laid out space in Ladue did not disappoint.  Long known for their amazing selection of swimwear, Splash opened their new shop June 2011, offering everything from shoes to denim to handbags. The staff was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.  Now to help you find a small taste of spring, let me show you some of what they had in store this week:

- Let’s start off with little black bright dresses!  Out with the dark and in with the paint box colors for 2012.  Also available in red,  this Hantastic dress was my favorite thing in the store!  Love, love the sleeves!

Emerald dress by Oliveacous $88.00

- This bright pink mini is amazing!  Paired with metallic strappy sandals, it’s even better!

Pink dress $390.00

- For an evening event, this sleeveless stunner will knock ‘em dead!

French connection sequin dress $298.00

- Splash carries a large selection of denim, including these bright Rich & Skinny pairs.

Rich & Skinny denim pink $139; red $176; blue $121

- Looking for something new to wear at the beach?  A huge selection of swimwear offers endless choices!  And don’t forget something fabulous to cover up with!

Vix tunic cover-up $157.00

-To finish off your beachy keen style, step into a pair of gorgeous sandals.  These are amazing!

Mystique flat thong sandal left $118.00; right $138.00

Now as we all know in my opinion, the best part of any chic boutique is it’s sale rack.  Hold on to your wool hats because Splash has not one, but two rooms devoted to sale items!  Friends, there are HANTASTIC bargains awaiting you here!

-Lots and lots of big name denim.  Helloooo my old friends!

J Brand dark wash $104.00 from $208.00

Seven For All Mankind $99.00 from $198.00

- Still not feeling the warmth just yet?  Laugh in the face of cold while snuggled in some fabulous outerwear!  I am crazy about the beaded belt on the top one.

Champagne/Strawberries faux leopard coat w/ beaded belt $99.00 from $165.00

Tulle red wool coat $79.00 from $110.00

- Not to be outdone by the regularly priced front room, the sale racks also offered swimwear.  Holy spandex, the choices here were amazing!  Big names like Hale Bob, Calvin Klein and Shoshanna just to name a few.

Lilly Pulitzer bikini each piece $44.00 from $68.00

Shoshanna bikini each piece $48.00 from $68.00

If lovin’ books is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!

I’m gonna give it to you straight:  I LIKE TO READ BOOKS.  A lot.  Since friends are always asking me for book recommendations, and to make it easier to remember what I have been reading, I started keeping a yearly list.  Well friends, we’ve just rolled over into a new year, it’s time to reveal my list from 2011!  Drum roll please!  The following are books I read last year (those read for a second time are notated with an asterisk):

  1. Sarah’s Key-  Tatiana de Rosnay
  2. Carry Me Across the Water- Ethan Canin
  3. The Palace Thief- Ethan Canin
  4. Dirty Secret- Jessie Sholl
  5. Rescue- Anita Shreve
  6. A Secret Kept- Tatiana De Rosnay
  7. The Lake of Dreams- Kim Edwards
  8. Once Upon a Time, There Was You- Elizabeth Berg
  9. Unbroken- Laura Hillenbrand
  10. My Last Duchess- Daisy Goodwin
  11. Save Me- Lisa Scottoline
  12. Listen To Your Heart- Fern Michaels
  13. The Villa- Nora Roberts
  14. The Girls- Lori Lansens
  15. Tales From a Prarie Bitch- Alison Arngrim
  16. Wife’s Tale- Lori Lansens
  17. The Hellion- Lavyrle Spencer*
  18. My Year With Eleanor- Noelle Hancock
  19. Bossypants- Tina Fey
  20. Stuff- Randy Frost
  21. Maine- J. Courtney Sullivan
  22. Five Quarters of the Orange- Joanne Harris
  23. If You Ask Me (And you won’t)- Betty White
  24. What You Have Left- Will Allison
  25. Minding Frankie- Maeve Binchy
  26. Ideal Man- Julie Garwood
  27. In Zanesville- Jo Ann Beard
  28. Body Surfing- Anita Shreve
  29. Fragile Beasts- Tawni O’Dell
  30. The Long Way Home- Will Allison
  31. Skipping Christmas- John Grisham
  32. Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness- Alexandra Fuller
  33. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without me?- Mindy Kaling
  34. Growing Up Amish- Ira Wagler

And I would like to note that I enjoy books.  I know many of you like the Kindle, but I.just.can’t.do.it.  There’s something about holding a book in your hands that just can’t be replicated on a tiny screen. Yes, I realize it has many, many fancy font options.  Still can’t do it.  That being said, unfortunately this was a bad year for bookstores.  All across town big name franchises have gone out of business.  What’s a bookworm to do?  If you’re looking to purchase some reading material, one place to head is to an independent bookstore.  And St. Louis has 12 of them to chose from!  A great one is Pudd’nhead Books 8157 Big Bend  63119.

Open since 2009 this literary gem is stocked with something for everyone.  They carry selections ranging from children’s titles to self help.  Their staff is friendly AND knowledgeable. When I say that I mean it, they have personally read every book in the store!  Puddn’head frequently hosts well known authors who come to town like Meg Cabot and Ann Hood.  Fun note: Once an author visits the store, they leave “graffiti” on the restroom wall, be sure to check it out!

Puddn’head sells book related merchandise as well like these awesome t-shirts from Out Of Print.  What a great idea for children’s birthday gifts!

OLIVIA t-shirt $20.00; Hardcover book $17.99

Mike Mulligan t-shirt $20.00; Soft cover book $7.99

Charlotte's Web t-shirt $20.00; Soft cover book $7.99

And just like any HANTASTIC store should, there are a few sale sections!  Two areas marked at 30% and 40% off, plus an entire shelf in the back of gently used books marked at 50% off!  A visit to Puddn’head Books will not leave you empty handed.  Check them out in Webster Groves or online at www.puddnheadbooks.com I even managed to find some reading material for Mr. M!

Of Course You're Still Cool $12.95

*Editor’s note:  This article made possible with help from reader Geri B. who is a great I-locked-my-keys-in-my-car-and-my-kindergartner’s-bus-comes-in-10-minutes-can-you-pick-me-up kind of friend.
